Week In Review - Ten Things Of Thankful (16)

Ten Things of Thankful

Yay for Saturday!! We were busy this morning having an appointment at 9:30am to pick out the tile for our bathrooms (dark gray floor and shiny white walls in the large bathroom, light grey for the guest bathroom) and decided to drive on to Erlangen to shop for new glasses for the girls. Relaxing now while my yeast cake is rising and contemplating all the things I've been thankful for last week:

1. Being able to take the day off to celebrate hubby's birthday with him.

2. Getting to spend a morning playing and cuddling with Violet while Lily was in kindergarten.

3. A large mail inbox capacity.

4. A new prescription for glasses for Violet. As I learned at the vision store, her astigmatism is too strong for regular standard lenses and her new set of glasses nearly cost us an arm and a leg, but she'll be able to see again properly, and that's worth more than anything else.

5. Nutella.

6. Good fall weather for Halloween. It was chilly but dry, and we were out almost and hour and a half. Can't ask for more on October 31!

7. My co-workers, who give me the "mommy bonus" of not having to stay until 5pm so I can be home in time to have dinner, dress up the girls and meet the group at 6:30.

8. A wonderful day with my parents yesterday. They came to celebrate Richard's birthday, treated us all for lunch at a really good Chinese restaurant and spent the afternoon at our place, relaxing and playing with the girls.

9. Spending hours on the couch knitting with Lily. Her first project is a scarve for her Mr. Bunny.

10. Wonderful, wonderful friends who listen to me and let me listen to them. What would I do without them?

Hope everyone enjoys their weekend. Thank you so, so much to Lizzi for hosting!

    1. She doesn't have the glasses yet. They picked them out today and we should have them some time next week hopefully..

Thanks a lot for stopping by, Michelle!

  2. Sounded like a wonderful week to me and glad you also had great weather for Halloween. Ours wasn't too bad either and actually was around 65 degrees here, but overcast, threatening rain all day. And poor Lily was, of course, sick. But now I got both girls going back to the doctor this morning in a bit due to bad coughs. Never ends and just wishing for a healthier November now! Happy Weekend to you!! :)

    1. Thanks a lot, Janine! Keeping my fingers crossed that the sickness leaves your house soon! Sick kiddos are never fun, and we hurt for them.. Definitely wishing a healthier November to you!

    lol
sounds like a very enjoyable semi-holiday week there. good to hear that Violet doesn't mind the glasses.. at that age (or maybe 4th grade) I needed glasses for astigmatism but took them off as soon as I left the house for school…. until I went away to college. lol

    1. Thanks a lot, Clark.. We were lucky in the glasses-acceptance department. I have glasses, so Lily was first excited to get glasses, and when Violet got glasses at the tender age of 2, both her big sister and I were having glasses, so she was all for it ;-) I'm glad that both love their glasses and actually wear them.

  5. I guess I am of the minority, but I am not that impressed with Nutella.

I'm thinking about painting my bedroom a soft gray color. Sounds soothing. Probably do the same in the bathroom.

I'm impressed that Lily can knit! I can crochet, but I've never been able to knit.

    Have a wonderful week, Stephanie!

    1. I grew up with Nutella, it's definitely a childhood thing, Dyanne!

We'll have the smalles bedroom in the new house and will most likely paint it in an ice blue or very light, bluish violet hue, not sure yet. But the gray bedroom definitely sounds nice..

Lily can't really knit, she's still learning, and it's not too easy for me to teach her because I'm a strong righty and she's as lefty as can be.. But she'll learn.. It's funny, I knit but can't crochet ;-)

  6. I think getting my glasses at that age was my earliest memory because all of a sudden the world became three dimensional... I love the knitting for the bunny as well!

    1. That is sure a lasting memory, Zoe. Violet probably still can't see three-dimensional, especially since she now has to wear an occlusion patch for most of the day to train the "bad" eye. We hope that once she starts school, she'll be doing better.

Lily is very excited about knitting, and I'm excited to teach her ;-)

  7. So many great things on your list! Being someone who struggles with her vision, I especially like that you're getting the right sort of glasses for your girl!

    1. Thanks so much, Jennifer. I'm just very, very thankful that we have both access to the right doctors to diagnose her and the correct lenses for her to improve her vision as much as possible.

  8. It sure sounds like a pretty good week you had there! I am happy to hear that Violet is getting her glasses. My daughter was in first grade when the school did the health screenings and suggested I take her to the eye doc. I couldn't believe how bad her vision was. She was upset about having to wear glasses until the day she got them and put them on. Her face lit up and she looked around at everything in wonder. She thought the world was a blurry place and we had no idea. She didn't know any better either so never said a word. That was a little long but your story just brought the memory.
Knitting and crocheting...both baffle me. I have never been able to do either one!
I like Nutella but recently tried the Jif Hazelnut Chocolate and like it a little better. Maybe I should have kept that one to myself....

    1. Thank you very much for stopping by, Sandy. We've had the very same experience as you had with your daughter, just lucky enough that Violet was only 2-years old at that point. Our pediatrician had referred us, and then she suddenly started to lose focus with her left eye, a sign that the brain had just "shut it off".

I can't crochet either, but believe me, knitting, especially scarves, is simply SO easy. Beyond that, I'm pretty much lost as well..

Honestly, I'm not buying the Nutella-brand either, just the store brand, and that one is better, too, so no hard feelings ;-)

  10. What a wonderful week! Sounds like there was a whole lot of time to enjoy family. Love those weeks.
I have no idea how to knit. My daughter can, though. One day I'm going to have her teach me.

    1. I only know how to knit scarves, Christine, so my knowledge is very, VERY basic; currently, I'm working on knit/felted purses for the girls, can't wait how they turn out!

We sure had a wonderful time together this week, thanks so much ;-)

  12. I love flexible work offices. Mines too let us all leave at before 5 pm if we needed to get to our festivities.

Glad to hear Violet got her glasses figured out. I completely understand what she (and you) are going through.

    Mmm Nutella.

    1. Oh, flextime is great. So thankful to work in my office!!

I will never forget Violet's face when she put on her glasses for the first time and could actually SEE. So very beautiful.

      Have a great new week!

  13. I'm so glad you had a gorgeous time celebrating your husband's birthday. What a lovely thing that you were able to take the day off to do it properly.

And YAY for your 'mommy bonus'. You have awesome co-workers. That's really amazing of them to let you go early, and your Halloween sounds like so much fun. Real shared, quality time.

Knitting. Ack. Not my thing. Not remotely. And Nutella's okay but I'd always swap in a HEARTBEAT for homemade strawberry jam.

WAHEY for the glasses. I hope that when they arrive, they do everything they need to, and that Violet will be able to see without difficulty - that will make such a difference to her. Glad you were able to sort them out for her, even if they cost so much. As you say - totally worth it.

    1. I'm really glad to have so great coworkers. I usually get off at 4:30 because I start early in the morning. But a lot of people were getting out earlier that day, so we had to arrange ourselves to keep the office staffed until 5 pm. So glad that my colleagues agreed to stay..

Ohh, home-made jam is always the best! My knitting skills are mostly focussed on scarves, so I still have tons to learn..

I'm sure that the glasses will again make sure that Violet can see properly. We'll see how it goes in January.. The funny thing was that the people at the vision store almost apologized for the price, asking me if I'm sure I wanted those. Well, if the kid needs them, she'll get them. Period. How could I as a mom say she'll not get the lenses she needs? Vision is so important, especially at her age.

Hope you have a great weekend, Lizzi!

  14. While I certainly love the whole list (especially learning that Violet needed a stronger script for her glasses and that you were able to get it for her), I have to say that I (possibly) appreciate Nutella the best. I do have to ask...how do you prefer to eat it? On toast? In cookies (which they are SO easy to make and they are FAB-U-LOUS!) or my personal favorite...straight out of the jar on a spoon?

BTW, I jsut now noticed Dyanne's comment...please disregard her assessment of Nutella...she's a little off in the head, I think. ;)

    1. Nutella is awesome! I love it on bread for breakfast, so yummie! I used to be able to eat half a glass, just because it's yummie, don't do that any more though ;-)

Thank you so much for stopping by!

  16. I have astigmatism in both eyes which also meant it took longer before they made contacts for my rx and my choices are more limited for types of contacts. So annoying!

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Contacts are luckily a long time in the future for us. To be honest, I don't even have contacts. I don't mind wearing my glasses, given that I can't really wear them anyways because I have really dry eyes, and for the couple of times in a year I'd prefer to wear contacts, it's not worth to actually buy them..

  17. I agree with you about the nutella and the mommy bonus. Those are truly two things to be thankful for. Now, about the glasses. I know what you mean. I have to have glasses that cost a lot because of my prescription. My lenses have to be custom made so it costs me close to $500 just for the lenses. It is a blessing to see however. I have to increase my percentage on the computer to 200 percent just to read and type. If you see typos that is why. I have very bad vision. :)

    1. I totally agree with you, Mary. I'd gladly give my last penny if only my little girl can see. We're having a very great vision store where we're paying for one lense and get the other one for free. Definitely helpful if one lense costs 200 euros.

I actually don't like to act on the mommy-bonus too much, because it's unfair to my coworkers who have no kids as their free time is as valuable as mine, but in those occasions I'm indeed thankful that they just give me the bonus ;-)

Have a great new week, Mary!
