Ready For Summer?

Finish the Sentence Friday

A major TGIF-shout out to all of you out there! I'm so glad it's weekend, read for some much-needed sleeping in and spending quality time with the family. I don't know why I'm so exhausted all the time lately, but I know I'm not the only one. Trying to get my energy back up by excercising regularly and getting fit again. I cannot believe that it's been 6 years since I've been running regularly. Today's run went great, I went further than last time, seems I'm getting back in the routine quickly. Only a little over 2 months until the day of the run!

To start this weekend, I'm once again linking up with Kate and Janine for Finish The Sentence Friday:

The best Fourth of July I had was...  probably my first one. I'm German, so we obviously don't celebrate Independence Day. the first Fourth of July I celebrated was the year I married the hubby. It was only a few days before we were getting ready to move to our new duty station in Ft. Riley, KS. Since the hubby took the tour bus with the rest of the band from Bamberg to Wuerzburg, I took the last opportunity to spend some time with my best friend, who studied there. We were both excited to witness the first military Fourth of July celebration. And I can tell you, it was awesome. The band wore their dress blues; they were playing their music, the 50 flags were presented, the canons went off, and it all ended in a great firework.

Ever since we're not in the military any more, we didn't do much for 4th of July, especially not since we've been in Germany, but I'm planning a little something for him and the girls this year. Not quite sure yet if we can do the bbq, because the neighbors had to dig up their yard due to drainage issues. Maybe I just prepare a picknick after work at the playground. But there will be something today.

Have a great weekend everyone!

    1. Thanks for hosting, Janine! The Fourth has been part of my life for such a short time, and living in Germany, it's so easy forgetting about it, and only remembering a few days later. But we'Re determined to raise the girls with both traditions, so at least they should know that there's something in July the people in America celebrate ;-)

  2. I think you should really try to hook up with other neighbors to do something fun. As a family (my husband is retired army) who doesn't have many friends here, it's easy to forget the great celebration that a barbecue, friends, beer-filled get-together is. I say go for it. Really.

    1. Thanks a lot, Kristi! The thing is, it's not even a celebration here, I'll be working a normal day, so it's a little difficult to organize something big.

  3. Hope you get some rest this weekend! And isn't it weird how exercising gives you more energy?!

    1. I plan on it :-) No running tonight due to pouring rain, so feet up, glass of wine, and watching Vanity Fair ;-)

  4. I thought I commented here last night, but perhaps I just read and didn't. Apologies if this is a duplicate from me and it just hasn't been approved yet or something!! There's not much that match military celebrations of their countries! I hope you have a great July 4 - maybe a picnic in a park since your neighbor's yard is messed up!

    1. Sorry, Kristi, It just took me a while to approve the comments. I usually don't get on until after the girls are in bed. I actually thought about doing a picknick at the playground, but just found out that the hubby's going to be at a dress rehearsal for the concert on Sunday. So I might just make sure the girls are dressed in colors and buy a bunch of sparking candles that we burn on the balcony ;-)

  5. I feel that the best way to celebrate any Holiday is...to spend time with your family no matter what you end up doing! However, the picnic in the park sounds like a great idea to me!

We are actually using that time to travel abroad and I am very excited about it

Have a wonderful 4th of July!

    1. I totally agree, MAria! Thanks so much for stopping by! Unfortunately, the hubby is going to spend the evening with his dress rehearsal for the concert on Sunday, so we might have our 4th of July celebration a little late ;-)

  6. That sounds like a great 4th! I've never seen a military celebration, but it sounds like it would be pretty amazing. I think the one's I was at as a child at our capital were great, but they all kind of blend for me.

Even though it isn't celebrated there I think it would be good to get together with friends and/or neighbors and have a BBQ and just socialize!

    1. It was very special, definitely something I appreciated to have experienced once. Since the 4th is a Thursday and we all are working, I'll just hope for good weather and will put together a picnic with the girls. I got sparkling candles instead of fire work ;-)

  7. Since I already know what you did for your family for the 4th, I can say, way to go. :) I've never seen an official military celebration of the Fourth of July, but now I want to, based on your description.

    1. I'm so glad I got to be at this celebration. Even back in the States, they didn't put on such a show any more. If you ever have the chance to go to one, do it!
