Fourth Of July - 5th Edition

Today, hubby and I decided to have a little 4th of July celebration with the girls, as part of our efforts of bringing them up in both the German and the American culture. We had to postpone our plans for the 4th because of other engagements. Today, after I got out of work, I bought some bread and a melon and headed home to prepare the picknick I'd planned. It was later than I'd wanted, because work was just crazy busy again, so I didn't get to prepare the full spread I'd planned but rather made sandwiches for everyone, cut up the melon and packed the blueberry muffins I'd baked for my colleagues for Independence Day. Once I'd prepared everything, we grabbed the picknick blanket and headed out for the nearby playground. We all enjoyed our dinner and as a little surprise I had gotten sparklers for everyone. I think the hubby had the most fun with them while the girls were still a little suspicious. After dinner the girls went to play and the hubby and I relaxed on the blanket, talking about each others day. We let the girls play a little longer than usual, and after they were done, they went down to sleep tired and happy. It was a little unfortunate that none of our friends could make it out to join, but we still had a fun little party with just the four of us.

    1. Thank you so much, Jen! It's really important for us that the girls know about their U.S. heritage as well.

  2. Nothing beats family time and picnics. =0) Looks like you had a lot of fun, especially after a full day of hectic work.

    1. That's so true, Kim! I definitely want to do that a lot more often, as long as the weather is perfect like that!

  3. You did it! Fourth of July in Europe, despite work commitments. Sounds nice and so special for your daughters :) I for one watched the day come and go and nothing to celebrate. However, I am going to be in France for Bastille day and I plan on making up for lost ground! ;)

    1. Thanks, Kim! It was a nice little picnic. Violet was scared of the sparklers, but the hubby was all the more excited ;-)

  4. I think it is pretty cool you are making sure they learn and are aware of both cultures. Sucks work was so busy. It may have been a blessing in disguise that many others weren't able to make it, given you weren't able to prepare as much as wanting and postponing? That may have made things a bit more hectic. Maybe not, though.

Either way it looks like your family had a great time!

    1. Thanks, Jak. They were born into two cultures, and we want them to know that and live them both. We have a mixed-tradition yule celebration, which I personally just love, the best from both worlds ;-)

  5. Sounds like a pretty good 4th to me! And your girls are just so cute. They look like they would be a lot of fun to talk things over with and enjoy a lot of laughs. :)

    1. It was perfect. I would have loved some friends stopping by, but it was great the way it was. The kids weren't really interested about the reason, they were just happy getting to picnic ;-)
