Thankful

Considerer came up with this wonderful link-up, reflecting on all our blessings we might forget in the course of daily life:

Ten Things of Thankful

This week's Top 10:

I am thankful for:

1. Being lucky enough to have "first-world" problems. I am complaining a lot about the weather, not having anything to wear, and in recent months, about the issues we're having with the house. But after all is said and done, I have no problems. We have plenty of food to eat, we have health insurance. The girls can grow up as children are supposed to, with plenty of play, toys, books, etc. After all things considered, I don't have any problems.

2. Having a start date for building the house (more details later).

3. Perfect weather all weekend long.

4. Being able to listen to the hubby playing a wonderful concert.

5. My mom coming to listen to her son-in-law even though she's not a fan of classical music.

6. Getting caught up on cuddle time with Lily last night.

7. Having a husband who shows me his love every day by doing little things for me.

8. Adrenaline. Without it, running on a broken toe might not be that much fun.

9. Watermelon.

10. Aloe to cool my sunburn. I sure enjoyed the sun today!

Have a great new week, everyone!!

  1. Okay, I got caught up on the words "broken toe" and "running." YOU RUN WITH A BROKEN TOE?! Color me impressed!

    1. Thank you so much for stopping by, Dyanne! I had the foot taped for about two weeks for pain management. I plan on running a 10k in early September and realized I don't have 4 to 6 weeks to spend resting if I want to make that run, so I kept running.

  2. I love watermelon, too! And Aloe is really priceless!

Ouch, you have a broken toe and run? Wow! Kudos to you!

I read on another blog that you are keen on German food? Just let me know if you need anything!

    1. Yes, I broke my toe about 3 weeks ago but cannot really afford to stop my training for any extended period of time. I really appreciate your offer, but I'm actually back in Germany and "at the source", so to speak ;-) Thank you very much for stopping by, Joy!!

    3. We're in the Nuremberg metropolitan area. What about you?

  3. house building! very exciting project it must be! the running (even without a broken toe) I have more difficulty with, it must demand a certain ability to focus on a very defined goal (going from start to finish). I don't know if I have the self-discipline to be able to develop the kind of endurance-strength that I imagine it must require.

adrenaline is fun, yes... usually in retrospect lol

    1. Thanks, Clark! I consider it more stubbornness, running right now, don't like to let my body decide whether I'm going to run in September or not. I will.. What does that mean about me except being nuts?

  4. Yikes, yikes, yikes! I'm running my first 10K August 31st, and I can't imagine running with a broken toe. Kudos to you!

    1. That's awesome, Kristi! I'm going to run 11.4k on September 6. Right now I feel like I'm NEVER going to make it, but I'll stay at it and not quite give up yet. My doc taped the foot up really well, so I'm actually not in pain any more, but I need to be careful with the swelling.

  5. Stephanie,
Having first world problems is one I've written about before, too. It's huge. It's so easy to get caught up in them...until I remember that there are children even in OUR first worlds who are hungry at bedtime, etc.
And OMG you ran with a broken toe? Please be careful (and you're making me look very bad as I have not run in much too long). Your husband sounds amazing - what does he play?

    1. Thank you so much for stopping by, Kristi! It is scary how much we take everything we have for granted. It happened once to me that I was driving home too late at night for it being Sunday evening. I was visiting someone with the girls and having brought cake and everything I soemhow expected to get at least a couple of sandwiches for the girls. Instead, I was heading home at night without a single store being open. For an hour the girls were sitting in the back crying because they were hungry, and I felt so helpless. I stopped at the first gas station I found (after an hour of driving) to buy them dinner. I don't even want to know what parents feel who have to send their kids to sleep hungry every single night, it must be pure torture..

My husband plays the bassoon, used to play in the Army band. Just love to see him on stage, and so glad he enjoys playing again!

  6. Thank you so much for stopping by!! Regarding the running, I think there's a little of column A and a little of column B involved.

I've been posting snippets of info on the house, mostly venting on all the obstacles so far. We'Re technically not building with our own hands but have contractors. We'll do some things on the inside, like painting and putting down flooring. Both hubby and I being not handy at all, with a full-time job and two young kids, we'd rather pay people to build us a house that will survive the first summer breeze than doing it ourselves.

  7. I like you are appreciative of all you have considering so many others don't. It's easy to take a lot of things for granted. I try to do my best to not complain about much. Most issues are very materialistic and in the end not very important.

I'd imagine you are exciting to finally have a start date on the house! Hope everything pieces itself together nicely.

I LOVE watermelon. Crooks does too! Whenever I buy watermelon and he smells it he starts freaking out. It's pretty funny.

I'm thankful I've not had to use aloe yet. Now... that may mean I haven't been out "enjoying" the sun enough, but who's to say. I burn easy, that's all I know!

Really hoping nothing worsens with your toe :-(

    1. After all is considered, we are really lucky. We're lucky to have two beautiful little girls, to live in a country where we have ready access to healthcare, a roof over our head, plenty of food, new clothes to wear, and social benefits should we ever need it. When Lily was 13 months old, she became very sick with a stomach bug. Without medical care, IVs, feeding tubes, and all that, she would have died without a question. And as I was there, standing by my little daughter while the medical staff fought for her life, I couldn't help thinking about all those mothers in other areas of the world, who would have had to watch their babies die in a similar situation. I couldn't bear the thought. Yes, sometimes I forget about all that, but I try to re-focus as often as possible.

  8. I'm so happy to see you join this group! It's a really great way to meet some very nice people, but it's also a good reflection time. And a thumbs up to your numbers 6 and 7. We are lucky ladies, indeed.
