Punch Lines

Finish the Sentence Friday

Linking up with Kate and Janine for another Finish The Sentence Friday. I'll be confined to my bed for the rest of the weekend due to jumping on the band wagon of the year's first flu-like cold wave, yay for me! Getting right to the topic:

I deserve a medal for the time I...

did not punch an old lady in the face who pitied me for "only" having a girl.

A little background: While we lived in Manhattan, KS, hubby and I went out for coffee at the Hastings cafe a lot. One time, just after Lily was born, we happened to hang out there again, when an older lady passed by our table, and started cooing over Lily peacefully sleeping in her stroller. After a minute, she turned around, looked me in the eyes, and said: "Well, you're young and still can have a few sons!". EXCUSE ME?? Seriously?? Her eyes were so cold, I think my smile just froze on my face. And I really had to control myself to not punch her. I definitely think that this is medal-worthy.

Have a great weekend, everyone!

    1. Had I not been so shocked, I totally would have punched her. Or - should I have remembered my upbringing - at least given her a piece of my mind...

  2. yow! it is amazing about (some) old people, it's like the world is inside there heads and that's all there is to it... in a sense, seeing how much change an old person sees, this should not surprise. Too bad they are not all kindly and wise!

    1. But even back at their times, the birth of a girl should have been reason to be happy, not mourn the loss of a boy.. The world in her head must be really twisted!

  3. I would be shocked speechless if I ever heard that come out of anyone's mouth like that! Unbelievable. Good for you for not punching her.

    1. I indeed was shocked speechless, therefore no punching or yelling ;-) Still can't believe it to this day that some people can be so mean!

    1. She definitely was. We were so happy having been blessed with a baby, the last think I cared was if we had a boy or a girl. Having our happiness talked down like that just really hurt..

    1. It was.. She was so hateful, just because we dared to be happy about our little girl..

  6. Ok, would have punched her and you totally deserve the medal. I love the people who would say when I was pregnant for the second time, "Maybe this time you will get a boy." Like having another girl would be so awful. I am telling you some people just need to learn to not speak. Hope you feel better and I, too, have been battling a head cold this past week.

    1. I totally agree, if people have nothing kind to say, why not jut shut it? The same happened again when we just had Violet, and the neighbor from downstairs tried to "calm me", telling me that they had 2 girls first as well, but then 2 boys... Knowing that she's a nice lady and suffers fron Alzheimers, I just ignored the slide ;-) And to be honest, I'm glad I have girls, they are so much fun!! Hope you feel better again, soon, Janine!

  8. I'm pretty sure I would have cried on the spot. And from the sound of it, I'm certain she would not have flinched.

    1. I was just way to shocked to do anything. I was really upset later, when the shock had worn off. How could someone be just so mean??
