I seriously have no idea to be honest. I used to love Nine Inch Nails when I was in high school, but to be quite honest that version by them was pretty depressing to me and not the NIN I once knew and loved, but then again I admit not a huge Johnny Cash fan, so never actually even heard the original to begin with.
Actually - and to me surprisingly - the NIN version is actually the original ;-) but it really sounds so boring, just can't get into it.. Never heard this song until last night, and the Johnny Cah version, wow.. goose-bumps!!
The Johnny Cash is devastatingly beautiful, isn't it? Beautiful words. I see what the Nine Inch Nails are trying to do with it. Can't say I love it. But that's just me. I'm going with the Cash being the original.
Hey Stephanie! I'm just now getting around to visiting other blogs nominated by Lizzi and have been hopping around your awesome site! I'm predicting the Cash song was your favorite and the NIN one bored you...? I love me some NIN, but that version makes me ansy. The JC version is so emotional. It just gets into my soul. Oh, duh, I bet I could read through comments and see your answer...hold please.....(insert favorite hold music)......YAY! I was right! *fist pump* Oh, I didn't realize NIN wrote that song! wow.
Thanks so much, Beth!! Indeed, the Cash song was my favorite, and he totally sings it as if he had written it. Glad to read though that NIN loved his version. Looking forward to snooping around on your site a bit :-)
I love both, but prefer Cash's... and for the record, after the cover came out Trent Reznor actually said that he felt the song belonged to Cash now! I don't know about "one is about drug use, one about aging" though. Cash was no stranger to drug abuse and it had a powerful role in his life.
Thanks a lot for stopping by, Sophelia! I have also read (and mentioned above) that TR really loved Cash's version.
Drugs definitely played a large role in Cash's life, but he mentioned in an interview after the song was released that it was about aging and being in the last stage of life.

ReplyDeleteI couldn't agree more with you, until the last tip. I also was surprised to find out that NIN actually wrote this song!
