Got Print?

When have you bought your last newspaper? I don't mean a magazine, or reading online news, when have you actually sat down with an actual print newspaper?

The other week (before the sickness hit), I was walking through town on some errand during my lunch break, when a lady stopped me and offered a free trail subscription for our local newspaper. No automatic extension, no cost to me whatsoever, just 2 weeks of a freshly-printed newspaper delivered right to my door. Who would say no to that? I sure didn't. So last Saturday morning, I found my first paper in my mailbox, and let me tell you, it was an experience again. For the first time since moving out from my parents' house ten years ago, I enjoyed my morning cup of tea while reading the paper. Local news I probably would have never looked up. World news, articles from the editors, politics, economics, sports, you name it. And a crossword puzzle! And that every morning ever since!

To be honest, during the week I don't have time to read the paper in the morning, but I love to take half an hour right after the girls go to bed to sit with a cup of tea and unwind with my newspaper, before tackling laundry, dishes, and whatever I have on my plate.

Will I buy a subcription after my two-week trial is up? Probably not, because during the week I simply do not have the time to take properly advantage of a newspaper. But I will definitely start picking up a paper when getting breakfast on weekends and enjoy an hour of just me, my tea, and my paper.

As an extra plus: newspaper is perfect for crafting!

  1. It has been forever and day for me, too. But you are right I used to love sitting in on the weekends especially reading the newspaper. Maybe someday I will get to do this again, as well at least I hope so :)

  2. I miss getting the newspaper but I have a feeling mine would be stolen if I had it delivered to my building. Will need to pick one up maybe this weekend.

    1. You totally should. I hope print newspapers will never totally disappear, even though it's not as popular as it used to..

  4. I used to get one every Sunday. We've gotten out of the habit, and I've been missing it lately. I think I'll get one this weekend.
And best tip ever coming at you... If you ever get your shoes wet, simply stuff them with newspaper overnight. The paper will soak up all the water and your shoes will be nice and dry.

    1. Thanks so much for the tip, Christine! I'm also using it to stuff into wool purses after felting them in the washing machine, to help keep the shape and dry faster.

  5. The good old newspaper...a lost luxury, if you ask me. I remember fondly afternoons at my Grandparents' reading the funny pages after school. And on Sundays when the big paper came? Ooh boy!

    1. Totally a lost luxury, especially since one actually has to sit down to read it. Life has just sped up so much... I'm getting my big paper tomorrow, excited for the cartoons ;-)

  6. My husband insists on getting the newspaper every day delivered to our house. I rarely read it. At this point, I read everything -- magazines and newspaper -- on my Kindle. As far as I'm concerned, newspapers just waste a lot of trees. I actually read more carefully on an e-reader too.

    1. Thanks for your opinion, Jessica! I still refuse to get an e-reader, I just like the feel of a book. I don't really see newspaper as a waste of trees, as we're not just tossing the paper once we're done but re-use it for crafting or other purposes.
